Air purifiers to avoid buying
We give each air purifier a CHOICE score made up of:
How well the purifier filters out dust compared to other models tested (this is 50% of the overall performance score), how well it filters smoke (40%) and how well it filters out volatile organic compounds (VOCs), like formaldehyde (10%).
How easy the model is to use and clean, including ease of moving it around, and whether it’s prone to tipping over.

Frequently asked questions
We test models from Acerpure, Anko, Arlec, Beko, Beurer, Blueair, Breville, Coway, Dimplex, Dyson, Electrolux, Ikea, InovaAir, Ionmax, Kogan, Mitsubishi Electric, Philips, Shark and more.
Our priority is testing the models you’ll see in stores and major online retailers. To do this, we check current market data to see what’s most popular. We’ll also test models that a lot of members have requested.
We test each air purifier with particles of dust, smoke and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) to measure how quickly and effectively it removes them from the air. This test is based on the Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR) industry standard test for air purifiers.
Unlike other product review sites, we don’t accept free test models from manufacturers. This allows us to be independent and review without interference. Instead, we buy products anonymously from a variety of retailers, then bring them into our labs. This means we get what you’d get, and can be sure the model hasn’t been potentially ‘tweaked’ for better performance.
Our lab testers have extensive experience testing heating, cooling and air products, ranging from pedestal fans to split system air conditioners, portable air cons and ceiling fans.
To test air purifiers, we partner with another accredited lab, with the test results and data overseen by senior project officer Chris Barnes, who is CHOICE’s NATA representative.
